Bring your own AI key

Most apps that add AI do it the same way: they run your request through their server, mark up the tokens, and charge you a second subscription for the privilege. If you already pay Anthropic or OpenAI for an API key, you are paying twice — and your task list is passing through someone else's infrastructure.

Jupiter Optimus does neither. You paste your own key, requests go from your device straight to the provider you chose, and the app takes nothing in between. There is no proxy of ours, no markup, and no AI subscription — because there is no server at all.

What the assistant does

• Ask what matters. Maximus sees your task list and helps you plan a day, break a goal into steps, or find what has gone stale.
• Suggest subtasks. Open a task, ask, and get a concrete breakdown you can accept or ignore.
• Weekly review and stand-ups. Summarise what changed and what needs attention.
• Draft a pull request description from the work you actually completed.

Most actions are proposals you confirm. The assistant does not silently rearrange your work.

Setting it up

1. Get an API key from your provider — Anthropic, OpenAI or Google all issue them from their developer consoles, usually with spend limits you control.
2. Open Settings → Maximus → AI assist.
3. Choose your provider first, then paste the key and press Save. (Switching provider clears the key field, so pick before you paste.)
4. The default model fills in automatically; change it if you prefer a stronger or cheaper one.

Before the first request, the app shows exactly what will be sent to the provider, and you can withdraw that consent at any time in Settings. Consent is per provider — switching to a new one asks again.

Running a local model

The provider list includes Custom (OpenAI-compatible), which accepts any endpoint speaking the OpenAI chat-completions format — OpenRouter, Groq, or a model server you run yourself with Ollama or LM Studio. Point it at your server's /v1/chat/completions URL. A server on your own machine or network needs no API key at all, and your tasks never leave your network.

What it costs

Whatever your provider charges — the app adds nothing. Task-planning prompts are short; on a small model like Claude Haiku, a day's use is typically measured in cents. You are billed by your provider at their rates, under their terms, with their spend limits — which is exactly the control an AI-subscription app takes away.

Where your key lives

In your device's Keychain, never synced, never sent anywhere except to the provider it belongs to. Keys are stored per provider, so you can keep Anthropic and OpenAI configured side by side and switch between them.

The honest edges

• Each device needs the key entered once — keys deliberately do not sync.
• No key, no assistant. There is no free AI tier, because there is no server to subsidise one.
• What you send is governed by your provider's terms. If your tasks are sensitive, a local model is the private option.
